Jean-Marie Londeix à Arminda Villa-Lobos – 5 décembre 1983

I am one of the many admirers of the music of Heitor VILLA-LOBOS. Furthermore, I have often played in concert “Fantasia” for saxophone and the “Sexteto Mistico” which I have recorded for Pathé-Marconi- E.M.I.

In 1977 I created the INTERNATIONAL SAXOPHONE ENSEMBLE, an orchestra comprised of all the members of the saxophone family. This ensemble not only plays regularly in France but in other countries as well. Fifteen original and substantial works have been specially written for this Ensemble. Recently, several similar groups have been formed in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Japan, and in France using our repertoire.

Unfortunately, we don’t have enough music to meet our needs. To fill this regrettable void I’ve transcribed numerous important works, most notably those of Darius MILHAUD, POULENC, SEROCKI, etc.

Would you please authorize me to transcribe “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 9”, originally composed for string orchestra, for Saxophone Ensemble?

I can assure you that this transcription, like those I have already completed, will consider the most scrupulous detail with regards to the music and the style of the composer. If you wish, I will submit my work to you.

If you authorize this transcription, I would program “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 9” next May, in the INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF BORDEAUX - 1984.

In waiting for your reply, Madam, I beg you to accept my sincerest, most respectful and devoted sentiments.

P.S. I am also working on a vast project concerning the history of the saxophone. Is it true that Heitor VILLA-LOBOS played the saxophone in his youth? And that he actually took part in popular ensembles as a saxophonist?
